supervision for pre-licensed therapists

Supervision provides support and direction to therapists who are in the process of developing their professional selves and pursuing licensure. A solid supervisory relationship is integral to providing effective therapy and is a mandatory component of all therapists’ professional journeys.

The job of a therapist is challenging and complex and demands a unique set of skills, knowledge and self-awareness.  Avoiding the pitfalls of professional isolation, burnout, and muddy boundaries between work-and-life as well as self-and-client are key and is something best learned in relationship to other therapists.

My approach to supervision is relational, active, and collaborative and focuses on informing and challenging working therapists while also supporting them in becoming the therapist they want to be, rooted in their own values and professional goals. Supervision sessions often contain a mix of case reviews, education, validation, and self-work so that therapists can become secure in their own knowledge, ethics, and practice.

I am available to provide post-licensure professional consultation to licensed therapists as well as supervision for those working to obtain licensure for the following licenses in Vermont:

  • Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

  • Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

scope of supervision

Supervision with Yana

Yana (she/her) holds a Masters Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Antioch University and her Bachelors degree in LGBTQQ and sexuality studies from Hampshire College. She uses the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in her work with flexibility and an open mind to each person’s individual experience of the world around them.

Yana is a fully licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in the state of Vermont (License #100.0134000) and has held that license in good standing with the Office of Professional Regulation of Vermont since September 8th, 2020. Because of this, she is able to offer post-degree supervision to those seeking LMFTs, LICSWs, and/or LMHCs in the state of Vermont. However, it’s important for all supervisees seeking licensure to be aware of the VT Board’s stipulation that they will “only verify supervisor qualifications AFTER supervised practice is complete and reports of supervision are received by the Office of Professional Regulation.

If it is found at the end of supervision that the supervisor was not qualified to provide supervision, the applicant will not be able to use those hours of supervised practice for license eligibility. The applicant will then be required to repeat the supervised practice hours to meet the qualifications for licensure”.

It’s also important to note that I am not an AAMFT-Approved Supervisor which may be required if you are seeking supervision for an out-of-state license.

About Yana’s Practice

Yana brings her unique comfort with and knowledge of sex and sexuality issues to the individuals, couples, and relationships she works with.

Yana sees clients from all backgrounds and relationship styles, especially including LGBTQQ couples & those in non-monogamous relationship structures. She takes a collaborative, active approach to both individual & relationship therapy to help clients become unstuck from ruts, break old unhealthy patterns, communicate more effectively, resolve relationship crises, and learn more about themselves as partners and as people.

She also offers 8-hr Relationship Intensives, 5-hr Discernment Mini-Intensives, Intentional Separation Sessions, and Modern Premarital Counseling.

Limitations of Practice + Supervision

Yana has never accepted any health insurances and continues to use a private-pay model. Her knowledge of insurances, insurance paperwork, and insurance regulations is limited to what was taught in graduate school and in her own post-degree supervision.

Because of these limitations, supervisees who would like to work with higher-needs clients and/or intend to take insurances may want to find a second supervisor to see biweekly in conjunction with doing supervision with Yana biweekly in order to meet their weekly supervision requirements. Or in some cases, they may find themselves better-suited to work with a different supervisor entirely.

fees

The rate per 1 clinical hour of supervision (50 minutes) is the same as an individual therapy session – $150 per session – as these supervision sessions take the place of seeing regular clients, often require outside research and paperwork time, and hold the additional responsibility of the supervisee’s practice directly increasing the risks and liability to Yana’s own professional license.

Sliding scale supervision fees are available for BIPOC pre-licensed therapists.

Malpractice/liability insurance must be arranged by every supervisee before the start of supervision (often provided with your student membership to your professional board) and must be maintained throughout the entire supervisory relationship.
