About My Work:

I am a self-employed consent, sex & sexuality writer and educator living in Northampton, MA. I am also (once I officially graduate in May) a couples therapist. My work centers around the belief that pleasure-positive & consent-based sex education can positively impact our lives and the world.

My workshops for youth & workshops for adults work to create a welcoming & comfortable space to explore crucial aspects of our holistic, sexual selves such as pleasure, communication, consent & the body. My workshops have taken place at Oh My Sensuality Shop, Hampshire College, Smith College, Bennington College, Brandeis University, Simmons University, Rowe Center, and various high schools & teen youth groups in New England.

I also write about sex for local and national publications, most regularly writing as the Valley Advocate’s sex columnist – my weekly sex & relationship advice column appears weekly on their back page and on my website yanatallonhicks.com.

You can read more about me & my work on my About Me page.

About This Internship:

Last year I raised funds via IndieGoGo to bring consent-based sex education to LightHouse Holyoke, a new independent learning center for teens in Holyoke, Ma. This summer, I will be working to develop this 8-week, 16-class sex, gender, and sexuality education course from the ground-up and am seeking an intern to help with conducting research, collecting resources, co-creating lesson plans, and collaborating on the development of this consent-based sex education curriculum for teenaged youth.

This is a unique internship opportunity with a lot of space for collaboration and intern input into this valuable work and has the potential to carry over into the Fall during the actual teaching of the class.

Internship may also include work with my general freelance sex education work and workshops that take place over the summer if the intern is interested.

What is Consent-Based Sex Education?

Consent-based sex education understands that sex is about so much more than inserting a Tab A into a Tab B. Consent-based sex education believes that sex is about relating, negotiating, and setting boundaries; that sex is about emotions, identities, self-care and sexuality; and that sex is about so much more than just sex. Therefore, our sex education should be about more than just the risks of or abstaining from sex.

Consent-based sex education believes youth are entitled to the accurate and honest information they need to make safe and healthy decisions about themselves, their sexual identities, and their sexual and romantic experiences. And that consensual skills will make a lifelong positive impact.

The exact content, goals, and flow of these classes is currently very fluid and undetermined so creativity in the planning of them is encouraged!

Please read more about consent-based sex education, my #FUNDCONSENT campaign, and my goals for these classes here.

What I’m Looking for in an Intern:

The ideal intern will be able to receive funding for this internship from their academic institution as I am currently unable to pay interns for this work. An interest and preferably some experience either academically, professionally, and/or personally in the area of sex education, sexuality & gender studies, curriculum development, youth education or other related fields is a must. The ideal intern will have the flexibility required to engage in work with a freelance educator – some weeks can seem heavy, others light, etc.
